Believe

Believe in yourself. Have confidence in yourself as a person and as an artist. If artists do not have confidence in themselves, their art will lack it as well. Can art have confidence? Yes, I believe it can. When you look at art, do certain works grab you and demand a longer look? Why did that one piece keep you looking? Was it the art you liked or the artist that made it? Well, it could have been that the artist had confidence and the resulting work of art showed it. I have been painting for over 60 years and my early pieces, although good lacked something I couldn't put my finger on until recently. I have not just become more experienced and knowledgeable over those 60 years. I have become confident in myself as a person and an artist. No longer do I worry about mistakes as they have taught me valuable lessons. I no longer concern myself about the subjects that I used to find more difficult. Why is this? Confidence in myself. If you have it, others will see it, but if you lack confidence in yourself how can you expect others to believe in you or your artistic abilities? Do not set aside subjects that are difficult or you will never paint them and never learn how to paint them. Take that confidence and apply it here. Paint these subjects more, not less. One by one the difficult subjects cease being difficult and you gain even more confidence in yourself. You are the artist. If you don't make the art piece it will never be made. That is an amazing concept to me. So just get to your studio and make art you believe in. And others will believe in it too.
